The RCA congratulates its members Edward Burtynsky, Jane Kidd, Wanda Koop, Suzy Lake, and William Vazan on receiving the 2016 Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts.

The Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts were created in 1999 by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Governor General of Canada. Over the past 16 years, the awards have celebrated Canada’s vibrant arts community and recognized remarkable careers in the visual and media arts.

RCA Member Leslie Reid is Featured in Solo Exhibition at the Founders’ Gallery, Military Museums, Calgary, AB

RCA member Leslie Reid is featured in a solo exhibition entitled “Mapping a Cold War” at the Founders’ Gallery, Military Museums in Calgary, Alberta.

This exhibition is the result of Reid’s participation in the Canadian Forces Artist Program (CFAP). Through this residency, Reid travelled with the military throughout the North, following in the footsteps of her father who, as a young man with the Royal Canadian Air Force, flew photographic mapping missions in the early years of the Cold War.

Through historical photographs, contemporary photography, painting and video, Leslie Reid explores the complexities of the Canadian North and High Arctic revealing the entwined nature of defence, northern populations, and the environment.

RCA Member Alan Stein’s Work Featured in Documentary “Al Purdy Was Here”

RCA member Alan Stein’s work is featured in a documentary, by filmmaker Brian D. Johnson, about Canadian poet Al Purdy entitled “Al Purdy Was Here”.

The film premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and is currently being screened all over the country, to great reviews. “By turns elegiac and celebratory, this documentary tribute to the late, great Canadian poet Al Purdy features readings, reminiscences and performances from some of the greatest names in Canadian letters and music.” - TIFF

RCA member Joice M. Hall is featured in a solo exhibition entitled “The Colour of Winter” at the Wallace Galleries in Calgary.

Artist Statement:
“The skies were particularly Wagnerian the winter of 2010 creating extreme drama over the lake…When the curtain of clouds broke up, the resulting sun rays introduced emerald greens and blues over the snow on the shadowed south slopes in contrast to the warm yellows, oranges, and pink in the sunlit areas.”

RCA Member Thaddeaus Holownia receives the Lieutenant-Governor’s Award & the Order of New Brunswick

Congratulations to RCA member Thaddeus Holownia who is one of three recipients of the 2015 Lieutenant-Governor’s Awards for High Achievement in the Arts and The Order of New Brunswick.

Holownia is an internationally recognized photographer, and Head of the Department of Art at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick.

Passing of Tamara Jaworska, RCA Member and Renowned Tapestry Artist

We are deeply saddened to acknowledge the passing of Tamara Jaworska RCA, a world renowned tapestry artist, and Order of Canada recipient.

Tamara passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2015 at the age of 97.

On behalf of the RCA we would like to wish her family and her husband Tadeusz Jaworski RCA our heartfelt condolences.



RCA Member Landon Mackenzie’s Solo Exhibition “Parallel Journey: Works on Paper (1975-2015)” in Kelowna, BC

RCA member Landon Mackenzie is featured in a solo exhibition entitled “Parallel Journey: Works on Paper (1975-2015)” at the Kelowna Art Gallery, in British Columbia.

Landon Mackenzie is a nationally known, Vancouver-based artist, admired for her large-scale works using paint on canvas. Less widely known are her works on paper, which she has been producing voluminously as a tandem practice to her big paintings, often while travelling. The exhibition is accompanied by a multi-authored, full-length book published for the Kelowna Art Gallery by Black Dog Publishing in the UK. The exhibition has been organized and circulated by the Kelowna Art Gallery.
