“With respect to lessons in self-referentiality and conceptual graphic rigour, foundational for Tombs was Marcel Duchamp’s Green Box. This green felt-covered box, with perforated title “LA MARIEE MISE A NUE PAR SES CELIBATAIRES MEME,” houses ninety-four loose notes (including one colour plate – research pertaining to the artist’s Large Glass). When Robert Tombs first came across the work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art after recently graduating with his BFA in painting and printmaking, he had his first conscious encounter with cerebral graphic design – quite possibly his first design influence. With the Green Box, he realized that serious conceptual and intellectual work could happen in the intersection between materials, ideas, design and printing. Duchamp’s editioning of the work in three hundred, as well as his innovative use of photo-mechanical collotype printing (including pouchoir stencil process), and his attentiveness to paper stock and ink quality, give the Green Box an unparalleled status in the history of artists’ print publications. Duchamp, who in 1905 began his compulsory military service with the 39th Infantry Regiment by working for a printer in Rouen where he learned typography and printing processes, voiced a desire for it to have the quality of a Sears Roebuck catalogue, a hybrid of industry printing meeting conceptual art, just as his Rotorelief would have.“
