Reverberating visual narratives intertwine Olivia Whetung and Mary Anne Barkhouse’s powerful artistic contributions in a way that feels like a visit more than a curatorial venture. Artistic conversations fostered by the charged site of the exhibition located along a thorough way between Rideau Hall and Parliament Hill bring about an awakening or a vigil where artistic processes and cultural teachings sit with colonial structures. Respect and responsibility serve as a solid foundation for this visit that invites viewers to consider other ways of seeing and understanding the land and waters that support our diverse communities of living beings.

Barkhouse is an artist whose practice has shaped such visual conversations for more than twenty years. The three tapestries and two sculptural installations she contributed to the exhibition expand the conversations initiated by Whetung’s two installations. Symbolic intersections between beavers, trees, and chainsaws or encounters between wild animals and colonial structures have shaped aspects of her arts practice for more than twenty years.
